How small is too small

Most people used the say the bigger, the better, but as we can see, technology is changing because now we say the smaller, the more efficient. Fibre optic cable has been growing over the past decades, and it is the most reliable, fast internet connection there is in the world.

fibre industry over the decade

How has the fibre optic cable industry developed over the past decades?

When we look at the history of fibre optic cable, we can see that the trend is that everything is getting more minor but more features filled. Some of today’s ideas were seen as impossible at the beginning of fibre optic cable technology. Still, with time we are introduced to so many other solutions that solve the problems we had regarding internet connection and cables.

History has it that in the 1980’s they used to use an optical cleaver that was a three-hand micrometre stage to position and cleave an optical fibre. This optical fibre used to use a lot of space because of its width and thickness. This technology would be adding more problems than solutions because it would take up a lot of space and require specialized skills to operate it.

Over the years, fibre has been improving its optical communication components to be suitable to use today, and the parts supplied now weren’t introduced in the 1980s. As the technology has been improving, we can see that fibre optical cables have also been improving and adapting to the technology lifestyle. In the 1980’s it used to take roundabout 30 minutes to strip and cleave a fibre. To connect and test the fibre optic cable connection was at an average of 60 minutes. Over the years, we see that connectors can now be installed in about two or fewer minutes and that the cables have been designed approximately 800 times denser than in the 1980s.

Fibre optic cables have been getting smaller, and now we are faced with the question of can we fix these small cables, or will I have to buy a new cable whenever it gives problems? As the technology improves, the methods to repair a fibre optic cable have been identified, and problems can be solved without changing the howl fibre optic cable connection.

Fibre optic cables have many competing systems that also want to be placed at the top. However, fibre optic designers and developers have been giving us the solution to the problems we have complained about. We can expect the improvements to keep improving as they add features and shrink their fibre optic cables.
